New football equipment trailer design

It’s quite pretty, but I have to admit, I was unaware that someone had made and retroactively issued BCS-style national championship trophies for 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, and 1985. Who knew?

Breaking news!

Mack Brown demands that the Philadelphia Eagles be voted into the Super Bowl anyway since they're clearly the better team.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

The actual news isn't as funny but is more important: the OU Foundation has worked with us to provide secure online forms for donations directly to our scholarship funds. Rather than wait for a newsletter, or mail a check, or bring one to homecoming, you can put a few bucks into your favorite scholarship fund any time you're browsing the Web.

These scholarship funds become even more important in slower times, because even a modest scholarship can make the difference between a student who wins a place in The Pride of Oklahoma and can accept it, and one who cannot because he or she can't make time for both work and performance.

Since the OU Alumni Club matches our scholarships with an equal amount of tuition waivers (up to $1000), a little can go a long way. And your employer may match your gift, so it could be doubled in value going into the funds and doubled in value coming out as well!

We've posted a new page with all of the information on donating: how the scholarship funds work, how the money is used (with links to the Foundation's guidelines for using funds), the payout rate, and more. Our other new page for making donations has links to all nine of our scholarship fund (eight named funds and one general scholarship fund), plus Foundation links for both OUBAA and University Band non-scholarship funds, and a link for sending non-scholarship money to OUBAA via PayPal (not tax-deductible).

The donation page has all the details. It's easy to find because it's right there in the left side of the page from now on, right underneath our logo. The URLs for both the donation page and the reasons for donating page are stable and easy to remember, too, so feel free to send them to anyone you know who might want to throw in a few bucks for future generations of Pride.

Even small donations add up quickly, and now anyone can make small donations anytime they want. I hope we'll see those funds grow like never before so the most talented musicians, in Oklahoma and elsewhere, will know they can get assistance if they can earn a spot in The Pride of Oklahoma!

Contact information

Please do not call the band office (University Bands) if you have band alumni questions—their days are extremely full, and we don't wish to add to that. Click here to read the full entry for telephone and E-mail contact information about Homecoming 2008.

Free Chik-Fil-A chicken strips for wearing a team logo

Need an excuse to wear OU logo shirts on September 1, after the first home game? If you're near a Chik-Fil-A, this might do:

An open box of chik-fil-a chicken strips. On September 1st, go into any participating Chik-Fil-A wearing a sports team logo and they'll give you an order of their "new and improved" chicken strips. The logo can be from any level of football team, even the one your kid is on.

Not that we're endorsing any particular fast food outlet, but as band alumni, we're always in favor of free food.

A brief moment of levity

Keeping Time

As with all XKCD comics, be sure to hover your cursor over the image to get the second punch line. :-):

"Activision Reports Sluggish Sales For Sousaphone Hero"

The Onion, "America's Finest News Source," reports that Activision only sold 52 copies of this sequel to Guitar Hero nationwide in its first week of availability:

Sousaphone Hero offers two dozen public-domain marches, including 1893's "The Liberty Bell," 1896's "Stars and Stripes Forever," and 1897's "Entry of the Gladiators." The bulky sousaphone-shaped controller coils around the body, and players wear white spat-like foot coverings fitted with sensors that monitor synchronized marching steps. As with the fret buttons on Guitar Hero's guitar peripheral, the sousaphone controller's three valves are color-coded to match on-screen notes the player must hit.

So don't count on weekends with your Xbox 360 and Sousaphone Hero to get in shape for homecoming!

We get search requests

A sample of the search engine requests that brought people to this Web site on Sunday, August 20, 2006:

OK Oklahoma fight song (via FireFox's built-in Google search)

I won't judge how official anything is, but if you've never read the story behind O.K. Oklahoma, or heard the original 1939 debut on the NBC radio network, read the story O.K. Oklahoma at 65. (I updated the audio file tonight with a version that's easier to hear, and that's hosted on a faster server, so listen and enjoy!)

OU first football game 2006

See here. The Pride of Oklahoma's first performance, however, will be this Thursday, August 24, at the Big Red Rally.

big red rally ou 2006

Ah, someone asked about that, too! No wonder - pay no attention to the Big Red Rally Web Page on OU's site, as it has not been updated in two years. Shame, shame. And we're volunteer labor here! (It is described on the schedule for Howdy Week 2006, though - it starts at 5:30 PM in Our Favorite Stadium.)

el toro caliente Ohio State Band

Can't say anything about "TBDBITL" (always up for debate in these parts, tho no offense intended), but The Pride performed Dr. Roland Barrett's arrangement of Scott Boerma's El Toro Caliente in both 2002 and 2005. Pride alums who can tell good stories about their first OU game in uniform can still win the 2005 CD with that recording on it, if they don't dawdle.

That's us! Hope you found everything you wanted - if not, post a question and someone is bound to know something.

Sooner Prayer

Sooner Prayer (as seen on an OU football message-board)

Forgive Me Father For I Have Sinned

I rooted for Texas.

I rooted because I live in the heartland and couldn't take another year of "USC's invincibility."

I rooted because of the 47-game winning streak.

I rooted because of my Big 12 loyalty.

I rooted because all my Longhorn friends cheered for us at the Holiday Bowl.

I'm glad Texas won.

I feel SO dirty.

I hate Texas.

Amen.
